Holidays | Superheroes vs. Villains Halloween Costumes

EEK!  There are only 29 days left until Halloween!!!  There is a big debate going on most days in our house – Superheroes or Villains?  Luckily my boys are still on the good guys and I *think* they’ve decided on Superheroes, or I sure hope so because Iron Man and Smash Hulk costumes have already been purchased.

Or have a little fun and pair up with the family next door and duke it out on the streets of your neighborhood—one family good, the other the ultimate clan of evil.

Dark or light, hero or scoundrel… whichever calls your name, BuyCostumes has got you covered. Here are a few ideas from both sides to give you some inspiration:

DIY Tie Back Holder

By day I’m a stay-at-home-mom but I am also a part-time newborn photographer at Blue Egg Photography. Photographers tend to build up a large stash of tiebacks and headbands for girls and my collection is growing quickly so I thought it was time to build something to store them, here is a tutorial for my DIY Tie Back Holder. I think I’m going to make a second tieback holder for my daughter’s headbands and hair ties too.

I built this entirely from supplies I already on hand so it was a totally free project – my favorite kind!

– Scrap piece of lumber (mine is about 2 feet of a 2×4)
– Paint & Paint Brush
– Sandpaper
– Krazy glue or Gorilla Glue
– Clothespins

1. First up I sanded my lumber to remove the splinters, mine was a piece of scrap wood so it was pretty rough.
2. Next I picked out my paint – I decided on Annie Sloan Chalk Paint in Provence.  This was a leftover can from refinishing my sewing table.

3. I added one coat of paint and waited for it to dry before adding a second.

4.  Next up I lightly sanded the edges to distress the wood a bit.  I used 120 grit sandpaper blocks purchased from Lowe’s.

5.  Finally I used Krazy Glue to add on clothespins.  Mine are about 2.5 inches long and were purchased from Michael’s.  You could also use full size clothespins and you just wouldn’t be able to put as many tiebacks on your holder.

6.  Add your tiebacks/headbands and enjoy!

I do still need to add a sawtooth photo holder to the back of the wood.  I’m just deciding whether to add it to the top to hang it vertically or if I should put in the middle and hang it horizontally.  What do you think?

sarah parson - Love this. So super cute.

Lavende & Lemonade - Very cute! Looks adorable, and super practical. It would look great either way…I guess it depends on where you’ll be hanging it!

Ana - I so so so love when I see crafty people like you! I always say I can do that, too. But then… when it’s done I always try to make a note to self not to try to do it again. Jealous of your many talents. 🙂

Natalie - This is adorable–I really love the blue paint! I’m always looking for ways to organize all the hair stuff for my daughter and I. 🙂

Fireplace Mantel – DIY Rustic Fall Decor under $15

I’m so excited for my first post here on Robyn Builds a Nest.  We’ve been in our new home since April and I’ve been anxiously waiting for September so I could decorate our fireplace mantel for Fall.  Luckily I had plenty of time to plan and think ahead!

This project was inspired by a post over on Shanty 2 Chic and their DIY Chalk Board Sign.  I had originally intended to completely recreate their project but I was having a hard time finding tall enough letters locally and the shipping prices to order them online was just something that I couldn’t stomach.

Here is my spin on the signs followed by the instructions.

I made the four wooden signs as outlined on Shanty 2 Chic, however my local Lowe’s didn’t carry 10 foot 1×3’s so I bought three 8 foot 1×3’s instead.  The folks that work there are nice enough to cut them for you if you don’t own a saw, or you can use something like the Ryobi Compound Miter Saw to do it yourself, it’s well worth the investment!

Once I got the wood glued and the shims nailed I went ahead and stained them.  I let them dry completely while I searched for letters so they sat for a few days while I thought of what to do with them.  Then I decided it was time to dust off my Cameo Silhouette that was still in storage from the move.  I remembered I had recently purchased a deer silhouette with intentions of using it on a pillow cover but I had a feeling it would be great on my wooden signs as well.  I went ahead and downloaded the free shape of the week (a leaf) and a tree silhouette as well.

After cutting all three shapes on card stock I then went ahead and taped them onto my wooden signs.  I already had some white craft paint and sponge brushes so I just painted (dabbed) and then carefully removed the silhouette stencils and let them dry.  I really love the way they turned out but I think I still might play with them a bit more and maybe sand the edges a bit.  What do you think?
